Spring Term 2020 – From Scunthorpe to India
This term we are excited to be travelling to India. We will be learning about the similarities and differences between Scunthorpe and India. We will be using maps, atlases and globes to look at the human and physical features of each place. In DT, we will be finding out about where our food comes from and what makes a healthy diet. We will also learn about and taste the different foods of India in preparation for making our own Indian snacks.
In art, we will be learning about landscape artists and we will be developing our painting techniques to create our own landscapes pictures.
We will continue to monitor the changing seasons and record the daily temperatures and weekly rain fall.
Our PE day is Thursday, Please make sure that your child brings their named PE kit with them on this day.
We will visit the library on Tuesday, when your child can choose a book to scan out and bring home to share.
To begin the autumn term the children have a transition unit based on the author Julia Donaldson. This is to help settle the children who have moved from the Foundation Stage as well as continuing the work from our transition day back in July. We will be looking at some of her books, focusing on the character and plots before retelling our own stories.
We will then be starting our autumn term topic called ‘Houses and Homes’. This is a science-based topic when we will be looking at and naming a variety of different materials. We will be thinking about their properties and how they are best suited to make different objects. This will then link into the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ when we will investigate which material is the best to build a wolf-proof house. In design technology, just like in theThree Little Pigs, we will learn how we can join different materials to create a strong structure and then construct our own houses. We will be looking at the local area and the different houses we can see using our sketchbooks to record different designs. Throughout this term, we will be learning various poems and looking for vibrant vocabulary to help us make our writing more interesting.
Please note –
PE is on a Thursday so the children need their indoor kits (white t-shirt & black shorts. They can wear black plimsolls but trainers are not needed for indoor PE).
Our Library time is on a Tuesday so please can the children ensure they bring their books to exchange on this day.
We have a busy and exciting term ahead and can’t wait to get started!
