Introduction to the Spring Term

After the success of the autumn term and our Roald Dahl topic, we are excited to get going on our new spring topic, What a Wonderful World. We have already jumped into our new class reading book, The Firework Maker’s Daughter. It’s about a courageous and determined young girl called Lila.

In literacy, we are looking in depth at the characters and discussing the similarities and differences between their personalities and strengths. We have also been inspired by the locations described in the book and therefore explored writing jungle setting descriptions, using prepositions to make our sentences more interesting. We even filmed ourselves reading our work out loud for the website (check out the Jungle Description folder below) in order to persuade Sir David Attenborough to use the area of Mount Merapi for his next project!

In geography, we have been researching and investigating the different types of volcanoes, just like the Mount Merapi in Indonesia, which is featured in The Firework Maker’s Daughter. It’s been extremely fascinating! In D.T. we have started to plan our own model volcanoes and we are going to connect our D.T. project to science when investigating irreversible changes. In numeracy, we are continuing to push ourselves as problem solvers and have recently been investigating angles!
