Westcliffe Primary School – Mathematics Long-Term Plan
At Westcliffe Primary School, our mathematics curriculum is carefully planned from Nursery to Year 6 to ensure every child develops confidence, fluency and a deep understanding of mathematics. Learning is sequenced so that children build secure foundations before applying their knowledge through reasoning, problem solving and real-life contexts.
Our curriculum is based on the principle that mathematical understanding develops over time. Children revisit important concepts such as counting, number composition, calculation, shape and measure throughout their primary years, allowing them to strengthen prior learning while making meaningful connections to new knowledge.
Our long-term plan provides clear progression across all areas of mathematics from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6. Each unit has been carefully sequenced so that pupils:
develop secure number sense and fluency;
build conceptual understanding before moving to abstract methods;
revisit and deepen previous learning through retrieval and application;
develop reasoning and problem-solving skills alongside procedural fluency;
apply mathematics confidently in a range of practical and real-life situations.
Although we have a carefully planned long-term curriculum, we recognise that every cohort is different.
Teachers use ongoing assessment to identify strengths and areas requiring further development. This allows us to respond to pupils' needs by:
revisiting key concepts where additional practice is needed;
adapting the pace of learning when pupils require further consolidation;
providing greater challenge through reasoning and problem-solving when pupils demonstrate secure understanding;
ensuring all children have the foundations needed before moving to new learning.
This responsive approach means that the order or length of some units may occasionally be adapted to best meet the needs of the cohort while ensuring full curriculum coverage.
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning.
Teachers regularly use:
daily assessment for learning within lessons;
retrieval practice and low-stakes quizzes;
end-of-unit assessments;
professional judgement based on pupils' independent work.
Where pupils require additional support, we provide targeted teaching, in-class adaptations, small-group intervention or carefully planned pre-teaching to help them achieve success.
Where pupils demonstrate secure understanding, they are challenged through rich mathematical tasks that develop reasoning, justification and problem-solving rather than simply moving on to new content.
In some academic years, Year 6 pupils may be taught in set groups for mathematics.
This decision is based on assessment information, teacher judgement and the needs of the cohort. It is not a fixed feature of our curriculum and is reviewed annually to ensure that it provides the greatest benefit for pupils.
We believe children learn mathematics most effectively when they:
use practical resources and visual representations before moving to abstract methods;
revisit learning regularly to strengthen long-term memory;
explain and justify their mathematical thinking;
make connections between different mathematical concepts;
solve increasingly complex problems using previously learned knowledge.
By combining carefully sequenced learning, responsive teaching and high expectations, we aim to ensure every child leaves Westcliffe Primary as a confident, resilient and capable mathematician.
