'Our school is committed to inspirational teaching that develops aspirational young people.'

1M

Year 1 Autumn term 2023

Welcome to 1M’s class page.  Your child’s teacher is Mrs Murray and Miss Heron is our class’ teaching assistant.

This term our topic is called ‘Westcliff’.  We are going to be learning about the history of our local area, thinking about how it has changed and developed as time has gone by.  We will be looking at maps and we will also go on a local walk to look at the local area.  In art, we will be developing our drawing skills and we will be drawing buildings linked to our topic.  We are going to have a visit from the Mayor this term, too.

In science, we are going to be learning about animals, as well as thinking about the weather and how it changes over the seasons. In D&T, we will be working on our joining skills using stitches such as running stitch. In computing, we will continue to use the Purple Mash app to improve our ICT skills.  We will cover online safety, effective searching, Lego Builders and technology outside of school.

Our indoor PE session will be on a Monday afternoon in the hall.  Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school every day, as our outdoor PE session may have to change due to weather conditions.

In RE we will be learning about Christianity, including the Creation Story. In PSHE we will be learning about choices and consequences, our whole self, health, friendships, resilience, online safety and British Values. In music, we will be following the Charanga scheme and we will be learning the songs, ‘Hey you’, ‘Rhythm in the way you walk’ and ‘The Banana Rap’ song.

We are really looking forward to this term and the learning adventures we will go on.

We are lucky that we have a lovely school library. Your child will be able to visit the library with Miss Nicholls every other week.  1M will visit the library on Tuesday  afternoons to choose a book to take home and again on Thursday afternoons to have a story with Miss Nicholls.  They will need to bring their book back two weeks later on the Tuesday to change it and choose a new one.

Your child can also help to earn their class an extra ten minutes playtime every week if their class wins the reading challenge – the class with the highest number of reads, wins!  Please make sure your child brings their Home School Diary into school every day so we can count their reads.  Diaries MUST be in school on a Friday so that they can be checked and signed and so that your child can earn credits and eligibility for the Good Choices reward.

Please look through your child’s Home School Diary for more general information, especially to find out how you and your child can make sure that they are eligible for the termly ‘Good Choices’ reward.  We hope to see your child there!
